Why do we covet the attention of our enemies?

We all have our own enemies and we've got our reasons for hating them. But sometimes we do things to get their attention and make them focus on the rivalry.
have you noticed such behaviour? Like Tom and Jerry?

Even though they are arch enemies, if everything stays smooth, one of the parties does something to pick on other and there comes the attention part.
Does this happen often? Why?

I have seen people doing this,I think making their enemies irritated gives them a satisfying feeling that's why they draw the attention of their enemies to irritate them.
